Rurouni Kenshin

As I mentioned I’ve watched a lot of anime shows lately. One of those includes Rurouni Kenshin. The show is about an ex assassin who gives up killing in order to protect people. This is set in the Meiji era of Japanese history (1868-1912). It’s a fighting anime but there isn’t all that much blood shed. This is one of the shows that I grew up watching, much like Sailor Moon, Dragonball, and Yu Yu Hakusho. I didn’t remember much of the show so it was pretty fun to go back and see it all. It’s a good show. It has an interesting plot, even if some of the story arcs can be somewhat tiresome. The characters are fun and it has a bit of everything like a good show should. Towards the end of the show they tried to introduce live action shots but that kind of ruined things for me. I attempted to watch the movies at the end but I couldn’t get into them. I think they may have used different graphics and I just wanted to see the old ones. This is a longer show, with something like 100 episodes. If you have time to watch them all it’s a good show. Even if you have time to watch an episode here and there I would recommend it.

Princess Resurrection

So first I feel the need to apologize for not writing a post since… August? In my defense I’ve been out in the real world and traveling internationally for the last 7 months. Also I’ve only really watched 1 movie and a couple of TV shows in that time. The one movie was the 7th Harry Potter oh and there was The Social Network… But those were months and months ago. So I’ll skip those for now and come back to them later.

So anyway, I’ll try to be more faithful to adding the movies that I have been watching. So recently I’ve been in an anime mood. Mostly this is because Netflix, Hulu and many other online sites don’t work outside of the US or Canada. However the website www.kumby.com has a large collection of anime shows that you can watch free of charge.So I started watching a show called Princess Resurrection. The show is about a boy that is killed and brought back to life by the Princess of the world of monsters. He is forced to be her servant until she dies. The rest of the show is a mix of fighting and character development. It’s a decent show. The episodes don’t really connect from one to the other. This isn’t bad but sometimes the plot line could be better. My greatest problem with the show is that it ends and doesn’t resolve anything. The show is only one season long. The OVA at the end (found on the kumby website) wasn’t bad but also doesn’t answer anything. I would assume that the Manga is more interesting and is better written. But the show overall isn’t that bad. I liked the characters and the animation is pretty good. I would say check it out. Definetly don’t buy it without first watching a few episodes. After that you can decide if it’s worth a buy.

Soul Eater

Soul Eater is an anime in which a weapon miester and their weapon are attempting to get 99 evil souls and the soul of a witch. The weapon is a human who can transform into a sword, scythe, gun, or a variety of other things. The team is working for death and they are trying to rid the world of evil. This is a really good show. It’s fairly short only 51 episodes long but I enjoyed it a lot. It kept me guessing throughout the series. They kept throwing twists into it which kept it fresh and didn’t make it boring. I hadn’t heard much about the series before I started it but it is well worth watching. So if you’re sitting there thinking ‘man I wish I had a good anime series to watch’ take my advice and watch this one! I think you would like this show even if you didn’t like anime. Check this one out it’s really good.

Inception

Inception is really hard to describe. It is about a group of people who are trying to plant an idea into another persons head. They plan on doing this to him in his dreams. However the act of putting an idea in anthers head is thought to be impossible. I guess that’s about all I can really say without giving too much of the movie away. This is a really good movie. I’ve been looking forward all summer to go watch this and I finally got the chance this weekend. It is also the first time in a while that I’m glad I saw the movie in the theater. This is a very trippy movie so expect to have your mind messed with. This movie felt a little long. It kind of works with what the movie is talking about but there were times that I felt like I’ve been sitting in the theater for hours. Christopher Nolan is the director so if you liked The Dark Knight and/or Memento I think you should like this. I recommend people to go see it. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Blood Diamonds), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You), Ellen Page (Juno, Whip It), Tom Hardy (Star Trek: Nemesis, Band of Brothers), Ken Watanabe (Cirque du Freak), Tom Berenger (Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon), Marion Cotillard (Love Me if You Dare, Big Fish), Pete Postlethwaite (James and the Giant Peach, Clash of the Titans), and Michael Caine (The Dark Knight, The Prestige).

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast comes from the golden era of Disney films. It tells the story of Belle who the village thinks is a bit odd by her village. After her father gets taken hostage at a monsters castle she goes to save him. She becomes a prisoner of the Beast. This is one of the greats of Disney films. It is one of my favorite Disney films of all time. They have great music and a great story. If you have children I would recommend this for them. If you like Disney movies I would recommend this. I think it’s just a good film overall. The cast includes David Ogden Stiers (Atlantis, Spirited Away), and Angela Lansbury (Murder She Wrote, Bedknobs and Broomsticks).

Modify

Modify is a documentary about body modification. It covers the gambit from plastic surgery to piercings and tattoos. They do a really good job with this movie. They don’t present the subject as a freak show which is easy to do with a topic like this. Some of what the people say is really profound. They are people who want to be beautiful and they do things to make themselves beautiful in their eyes. This movie shows every detail. Including all varieties of piercings including penis and clitoris piercings. They have tongue splitting and suspension. So unless you are prepared for that kind of imagery I wouldn’t watch this. But if you are able to withstand that then this is a fantastic film. They do an amazing job with it all. They have done a good job with this documentary.

Youth in Revolt

When a boy falls in love for the first time he is willing to do anything to get her to like him back. Unfortunately for him she wants a more intense lover. She likes him but wants more out of him. In order to win her love he develops an alter ego who is the complete opposite of his normal persona. This was a pretty good movie. I really liked the alter ego. The movie could have used more work with the story. It was also a little bit predictable. If you like Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno) you will probably like this one. The cast also includes Zach Galifianakis (Into the Wild, The Hangover), Steve Buscemi (The Island, Big Fish), Ari Graynor (Whip It, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), and Justin Long (Planet 51, He’s Just Not That Into You).

Watership Down

Watership Down is about a group of rabbits who are tying to make a new better life for themselves. They have to journey into the unknown and fight those that oppose them. This is an animated film from 1978. It’s also kind of disturbing. There are moments that rabbits attack and kill other creatures and sometimes ill other rabbits. The graphics aren’t the best in the world but that just adds to the creepiness. They start off with something like an Aborigine myth and the artwork is really cool. This has a good story and it is good but it terrified me as a child. This was the first time since then that I watched it. Now it isn’t as frightening but I can see how it terrified me. So this might not be the best things to show your children but it isn’t terrible.

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is about a Vietnam film that is being produced. The movie is filled with top name actors who are having a hard time getting along. So the producers decide that they will send them into the wild and attempt to get their real reactions to the crazy things happen. However, that plan is side-stepped when the actors run into real fighters. This wasn’t that bad of a film. It had its moments. It’s not my favorite movie but it wasn’t that bad. This is not for younger audiences there is lots of swearing which really isn’t that bad but for children it might not be good. This isn’t my favorite genre of movie but if you like this style film than you would probably like this more than I did. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, The Soloist), Jack Black (Year One, King Kong), and Ben Stiller (Dodgeball, Mystery Men).

The Lives of Others

The Lives of Others is a German film about a Stasi, East German secret police, officer who gets a post listening to a prominent director. He is tasked with marking down everything that happens inside the house. The house is wired taped so he spends 12 hours a day listening. However, what happens to him after days turns into weeks and into months? When someone knows everything about another person do they change? This was a pretty good movie. It was a little slow but I thought it was really interesting. I didn’t quite know what to expect while watching the movie I couldn’t tell what was about to happen. If you like foreign films you would probably like this. This isn’t my favorite German film but it isn’t bad.
